The recent work of Anna Bayles Arthur is a series of paintings on paper that might best be described as "inner landscapes." The paintings depict contained worlds, figures and forms derived exclusively from the imagination of the artist. Each painting reveals a narrative that speaks to the interconnectedness of all things and the mystery inherent in the physical world. The rich, layered grounds and delicate line of the pencil are vehicles through which the artist explores a seemingly infinite source of imagined relationships. Dialogues exist between the forms and the space in which they move, float, tug and sit. These dialogues, these conversations that take place between the various components in the work echo the drama of the natural world and the multiplicity of our human experience- they are both whimsical and disturbing, childlike, yet sophisticated.
